The popular light-themed family event focusing on urban culture was organized for the first time in 2003, under the name “Light is in Jyväskylä”. The event was at the time Finland’s first event focused on architectural lighting, widely known for its professional seminar and experimental lightings.

The City of Light event offers plenty of things to see and do to for all ages for three nights as in previous years, the event has included 80 to 90 different light installations and ancillary events. The event gathers well over 100,0000 visitors. In the last five years, the event has increasingly focused on temporary light art and ancillary eventss. In addition to the light installations, the event highlights new permanent lighting sites and organizes a seminar for the light industry. The event is held annually in the last week of September.

An open call search for the event is organized annually in the spring to create an opportunity for light artists to participate in the event from around the world. Additionally, the City of Light is also involved as an expert in organising various art and design competitions.

The event is organized in cooperation with the City of Jyväskylä, real estates, collaborative companies, city residents, lighting industry professionals, educational institutions, companies, associations and other operators. The City of Light also assists other operators to execute their light-themed events in the Jyväskylä region and elsewhere in Finland.

During the darkest times of the year, amongst other things, Jyväskylä organizes the Winter Wonderland in Church Park that will bring joy to the city residents and bring atmosphere to the city in the form of a series of impressive Christmas-themed light objects.

Welcome to explore the City of Light!
